MASERATI multi-disc self-locking differential
The self-locking differential with multiple plates generates a locking effect, produced by the friction between the plates in the differential body and is based on the difference in rotation between the two wheels on the same axle (speed sensing).
Some of these plates are integral with the differential body itself, while the others are integral with the planetary gears and, consequently, with the half-shafts.
The locking effect is also proportional to the load conditions: the latter increase as the difference in driving torque between the two wheels increases. The locking capacity of a multi-disc differential is expressed as a percentage: at 20% it means that, if one wheel slips, the other can still transmit to the ground a torque equal to that sent to the same spinning wheel plus 20% of the torque input to the differential.
